About ABC Nursery

Staff

Our most important assets are our staff. All of the senior members of staff have been at the nursery for longer than 5 years – some of them longer than 10 (not to mention the Manager who has been here for over 15 years!). This means that there is an enormous wealth of experience between them which gives a wide and varied view of childcare within the setting. ABC Nursery is managed day to day by Susan Ritchie with support from Rachel Smith (Deputy Manager), Sarah Croxall (Deputy Manager), Melissa Whitehouse (Senior Nursery Nurse – Pre-School Superstars)and Bev Davis (Senior Nursery Nurse – Little Stars). All nursery nurses are qualified at or working towards NVQ Level 3 in Childcare and Education. Every member of staff is first aid trained and all staff have been vetted by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) to ensure they are suitable to work with children.

Family Worker

Your child will be provided with a Family Worker to help and support their progress through planned and unplanned activities through their nursery sessions. At the end of each day you will be given a written report with feedback about your child’s general wellbeing including what they’ve eaten, and the achievements made throughout the day. Certificates and stickers are given to the children to encourage good behaviour and personal achievement. As all the staff are so experienced and have been at the nursery for so long, there is a continuity of care that cannot be found at all nurseries. The family worker is dedicated to your child and we find that the staff have very little time off sick as they want to ensure that their key children are not disrupted.

Meals

All meals are prepared are cooked on site by our qualified chef and are rotated every week so your child will not be bored with the same meal every time they visit, whether that be once a week or every day. Snacks include fruit and yoghurt. We aim to give the children at least their minimum allowance of 189ml of milk each day they are with us. Specific dietary requirements can be catered for and we aim to work closely with parents to ensure that all children enjoy their meals with us.

Regular Updates

We hold parents evenings every 6 months so that you can speak to your child’s Family Worker on a 1 to 1 basis – this does not detract from the day to day conversations we encourage, and the daily reports each parent is given for their child. We offer regular newsletters so that you can keep up to date with what is happening at nursery along with regular updates on the website and Facebook page so you can encourage your child even more with related activities at home. We are ready to offer any help or advice if you require any suggestions or support. We also run a text messaging service which will remind you of upcoming events or activities.

Rooms

We have 3 separate areas – Twinkle Stars (Under 2’s), Little Stars (2-3’s) and Super Stars (Pre-school). We also have our Starship After School/Holiday Club where children aged 5-8 can join us on a regular or ad-hoc basis . Each has numerous resources for your child to experience and enjoy – too many for us to list so feel free to come and have a look around!

Outdoor Play Area

We also have a brand new large outside area which has been totally redeveloped. Helen Bilton, Course Director for the PGCE Primary Programme at the university of Reading’s Institute of Education has highlighted the immense benefits for children learning outdoors. “Apart from the obvious physical benefits, children also behave differently outside. Research shows that their level of conversation increases, there is a better gender mix and they have much more ‘can do’ approach”. We truly believe at ABC Nursery, in taking the classroom outside by having a large covered seating area, a sandpit with solid cover which turns it into a stage (watch out for future performances!), blackboards, garden area for growing vegetables and flowers, weaving posts, funky mirrors, xylophone, musical area and a fairytale chair for story telling time with mushroom seats for the children. Whenever possible we try to conduct as much learning as we can outside so you may sometimes find your child reading and painting in this area rather than indoors!

All in all its a vibrant environment for your child to come to – stimulating and calming as well as being great fun!!

Ofsted and ABC Nursery

We were inspected in July 2009 as we had a new owner in March 2009. We are very proud to announce that we achieved “good”. This means that our next aspiration is to achieve “outstanding” and we are working hard to reach this at the next inspection. Please feel free to go to the OFSTED website where you will find our OFSTED report. You will find us under Childcare on Non-Domestic Premises and the report was completed in July 2009. Unfortunately we are unable to provide a link as the link keeps changing and taking parents to the wrong report.
